The Power of Textiles: Redressing Histories of Injustice

The Power of Textiles in Redressing Histories of Injustice

At our brand, we are dedicated to offering textile products that not only serve fashion, medical, and household applications but also contribute to a greater cause. Our products are proudly made in Africa, utilizing natural fibers and embodying principles of circularity and sustainability.

We believe that industrial design has the potential to extend its reach beyond the mere production of goods and can play a pivotal role in addressing historical injustices. Inspired by the work of Koumbi-Saleh, we have adopted a methodological approach that centers justice, redress, and reconciliation in our design and manufacturing processes.

Interwoven Textiles: Connecting Design, Theater, and History

Our brand’s tagline, “Interwoven Textiles: Giving Traditional African Textiles Connective Power,” encapsulates our mission to combine design, theater, and history to create textiles that serve as objects of healing. We believe that traditional textile design and manufacturing can be reimagined through this lens to foster positive change.

By taking traditional African textiles as a starting point, we embark on a journey of exploration and research. Our primary research question focuses on the potential of African fibers as materials for developing sustainable, soft, and attractive textiles suitable for everyday wear.

Raffia: The Heart of Our Brand

Central to our brand is the use of raffia, specifically raffia bamboo. This material holds significant importance for us due to its abundance, fast-growing nature, and affordability. By harnessing the potential of raffia bamboo, we aim to create textiles that not only meet the highest standards of quality but also align with our commitment to sustainability.

Through our innovative design and manufacturing processes, we strive to create textiles that not only tell a story but also contribute to the healing of individuals and communities. Our textiles are designed to serve as objects of connection, bridging the past and the present while honoring the rich heritage of African textile traditions.

By extending the reach of industrial design to encompass the production of textiles that redress histories of injustice, we hope to make a positive impact on both a social and environmental level. Through our brand, we aspire to contribute to a more just and sustainable future, where the power of textiles is harnessed to promote healing, reconciliation, and unity.
